Leon is beautiful. We went to the cathedral which, in my opinion was prettier than the one in Burgos. The thing that made the difference for me was, the windows.
Apparently this was the first cathedral that was built incorporating these stained glass windows everywhere. It was able to be done because by that time the architecture and engineering was advanced enough to figure out how to support the building with all of those windows. This ushered in a new era in churches. Prior to this time they were all dark. This church, I learned, suffered a structural failure at one point. After one failed attempt at fixing the situation (one of the domes was caving in), the right guy came along (can’t remember his name but I think he was from Italy) and after years of repair, Leonists held their breath while the supports were removed and voila! It’s still standing!
After touring the church we walked through square and ran into a Gaudi building with George slaying the dragon.
I got to sit next to Mr. Gaudi himself
Later we walked through a medieval craft fair and got quite a show from the gypsies. Who knew they played bagpipes?
All in all it was a good visit to Leon. Tomorrow off to Villar Mazarife!
